O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in early 2005, while she was still a high-school student. The judges loved her voice and she advanced to the Top 100 round. O'Neil had received high praise by the panel of judges. But she was a victim of significant defeats during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up within the bottom three and then second place. The judges were surprised by her performance, and recommended viewers to select those who sing well and had a strong voice, like Melissa. In spite of consistently impressive performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
